How To Help Your Husband To Stop Snoring

By Jessica 4 Comments

Can’t sleep because your man snores? Find our what are the likely causes and what you can do to get your husband to stop snoring.

My Husband Snores

Has every evening in your home turned into a race to fall asleep before your husband? Is this race due to the fact that if you don’t, then sleep will most likely be impossible once the snoring begins? You love your husband but the snoring you could most likely do without. Gripping at him will most likely not work since in most cases he probably has little control over his snoring so how can you help him say goodbye to the snoring so you can start saying hello to more restful sleep?

It might take some trial and error before you are able to completely rid yourself of the sounds of your husband snoring. This is because snoring is often caused by different things in different people. Not all snoring remedies treat all the causes of snoring so figuring out why the snoring is occurring will help you to determine which remedy will work best.

Snoring is caused when the airway of the throat is restricted during sleep. This restriction causes the tissue in the throat and nasal passage to vibrate which causes snoring. Some of the most common causes of snoring and their treatments are listed below.

1. Sinus Issues

Breathe Right Nasal StripWhen the sinuses are stuffy or inflamed it is hard for air to pass through the nasal passage and this can contribute to snoring. If your husband snores due to issues with his sinuses, he can try using a nasal decongestant in the evening about an hour before bed or nasal strips such as Breathe Right that attaches to the outside of the nose to make the passage ways larger allowing more air to flow through.

2. Weight Gain

When a person gains weight they can be losing muscle elasticity when this happens the throat just like other parts of the body is affected. The tissue in the throat may become looser and the person may begin to snore. Although easier said than done, the best solution is a good diet and an increase in exercise. This will help to restore the muscle tone and ease snoring.

3. Larger Than Average Adenoids

Adenoids are the soft spongy tissue under your tonsils. Adenoids are generally larger in children but adults can have difficulty with adenoids as well. Since the adenoids are located in the throat; if they are swollen or enlarged, they can lead to snoring. If this is the case then your husband may need to look into having his adenoids removed. Adenoid removal is generally a simple day procedure and takes only a few days to recover. Once the adenoids are removed his snoring should stop.

4. Age

If your husband didn’t used to snore but over the years snoring has become an issue, he may have age related snoring. Much like weight gain as we age the muscles in the throat relax and are less toned. Unfortunately he can’t turn back the clock so your best bet to beat the snoring may be to try some remedies that can help with easing snoring such as avoiding dairy products before bed, as well as avoiding heavy meals and even soy. Don’t keep your bedroom too warm because doing so can dry out the air and make throat tissue dryer causing more vibration. Instead consider investing in a humidifier that can help to keep the bedroom air moist and contribute to a more restful and less snoring environment.

5. Sleeping Position

How your husband sleeps can also have a big impact on snoring. People who tend to sleep flat on their backs have a higher likelihood to snore. This is because when lying flat on the back the throat is more constricted and there is less room for the air to flow. If having your husband change positions in the middle of the night stops the snoring this may be his main snoring trigger. Although it may seem difficult at first to change his sleeping position it may be the only way to avoid snoring. Consider buying him a sleeping wedge that can be placed behind his back to keep him on his side. After side sleeping becomes a habit, the wedge can become a thing of the past. Additionally, if your husband is open to alternate therapies, this self hypnosis program can also help re-train your partner’s brain to sleep on his side if he is used to sleeping on his back.

6. Medications Or Alcohol Consumption

If your husband had recently been prescribed new medication that has led to the onset or increase in snoring the medication itself could be the culprit. The medication may have an ingredient that relaxes muscles and this includes the muscles of the throat. The muscle relaxation also explains why alcohol consumption leads to snoring. Ask your husband to speak to his doctor about the medication; he may be able to take a different medication that won’t continue to have that side effect. If he can’t change medication, you can get him a snoring mouthpiece to help him conquer the problem. If alcohol is the problem then it is best to avoid it for 3 or 4 hours before bedtime to give the body time to recover from the alcohols affects.

If none of these seem to be the culprit for your husband’s snoring he should talk to his medical provider. There are times that snoring can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition such as sleep apnea. If this is the case then additional steps may need to be taken to not only ease the snoring but also to address the underlying health issues related to sleep apnea.

No matter what the cause of your husband’s snoring remember to be loving when addressing the issue with him. After all it is not a conscious act on his part and he may not even realize that it is causing you such sleeplessness. Encourage him to seek solutions to his snoring and hopefully soon everyone will be resting better.

Very useful tips! My boyfriend snores a lot more now than he used to. We’ve found that you can buy these nasal strips that stick to the outside of the nose and it helps to open the nasal assuages more and reduce snoring. I feel bad for him because he’ll even wake himself up repeatedly throughout the night because of the snoring. He doesn’t get very restful sleep at all.

We haven’t tried a humidifier yet. We’ll have to try that tomorrow night after picking one up at the store. And I’ll suggest he try sleeping on his side too. I didn’t know that could affect the way he breathes.

Thanks for the great info! Keep it up!

Snoring can really put a strain on bed partners because both parties suffer. I practice dental sleep medicine and treat patients with chronic snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It’s critical that a chronic snorer be tested to rule out sleep apnea. Chronic snoring does has a negative impact on your health. Untreated OSA will shorten your lifespan and greatly increase your risk of diabetes, hypertension and stroke. All OSA patients snore but not all chronic snorers have OSA. A Sleep study is the only way to make a proper diagnosis.

Help!! I’m with my husband 15 years and from our first night together till now he has snored so loudly he can actually be heard from the street!! (no joke) he was thin when we met and had gradually put on weight but still snores, he has quite smoking then went back on them and still snores, he can sleep on his back, side, head, upside down our standing up and still snores. We have wasted loads of cash on gimmicks that promise to stop snoring and he still snores, he even snores while awake but says he doesn’t realise, has up to now completely ignored me when I beg through tears of shear exhaustion to go see someone about it and have been to see counselors for marital problems as a result, how do I get him to take this serious enough to do something about it before we end up in front of a judge getting divorced??

My husband didn’t snore for 25 years of our marriage and for the last 2 years has snored every time he goes to sleep. Even for a short nap in the recliner. I’m sleeping in the spare bedroom now. I tried using fans and air purifiers at the bedside for white noise and that doesn’t work anymore. Please help with some type of advise. He does drink wine at night. He is hesitant to change any lifestyle that might help.
