Halloween is such a fun time for kids. Between the magic of dressing up and transforming yourself into whoever, or whatever it is that you want to be, the thrill of buckets upon buckets of candy, and staying up late to have a great time, it usually is one of the top holidays on any kid’s list! But, Halloween is also a time for parents to be cautious and remember to keep their kids safe even in the middle of all that fun!
The following are some easy tips and tricks to help make sure your kids stay safe on Halloween!
Tip #1: Never Let Your Kids Go Alone
No matter what, never, ever send your kids trick or treating by themselves, even if they are older. Make sure they go with a trusted adult, and preferably more than one. That way if anything bad were to happen, there would be more than one adult to handle the situation. Also make sure that there is a pretty fair child-to-adult ratio. You don’t want to end up so outnumbered that you can’t keep an eye on all of the children! But the main point is to never ever send your kids door to door by themselves. Even if you know your neighborhood, even if you are going to be nearby. Just never do it, it’s too risky.
Tip #2: Plan Your Costumes Carefully
Costumes can actually be really dangerous for kids if they are not planned carefully, so it is important to keep safety in mind when you are buying or making your Halloween costumes. One of the biggest problems is with costumes or shoes being too large. Shoes that are too big can cause kids to trip and fall, and costumes that are too big can drag the ground, also causing tripping hazards as well. Hats and masks can also pose a hazard since they can keep kids from seeing well, and could cause them to fall, run into things or hurt themselves in other ways. You might also want to consider having your kids carry flashlights, glow sticks, or adding reflective tape to their costumes and bags to make them more visible to cars and other dangers.
Tip #3: Make Rules
Make sure your kids know the rules beforehand. No running is a very important one, since kids can hurt themselves or others or even run out in front of cars. Your kids should also know to never cross the street without a parent, and never to get too far ahead of the adults that are with them. Make sure your kids also know to never go inside a house that they are trick or treating at, no matter what the adult there might say. Kids should also be advised to stay with the group, and you might want to give them a cell phone or walkie talkie just in case they happen to get separated. Make a plan beforehand about what you will do if for some reason you should become separated from your group, so they will not panic if that happens.
These are a few of the most important tips for Trick or Treat and Halloween safety. It can be a very fun night of the year, but if you are not careful, Halloween Night can also become very dangerous. It is important to make sure that your kids understand the rules and safety measures that your family will be taking before they even leave the house. Remember that pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries on Halloween, so pay special attention to crossing the street, oncoming traffic, and trick or treaters if you are the one driving! Follow these tips and you are sure to be in for a fun and safe Halloween!
